The #bstartup experience – Scott’s 2 pennies

In all honesty, attending the show was the last thing on my marketing plan up until about 6 weeks ago. After the internal decision to take part in the event was finalised, we were able to rapidly develop a set of targeted landing pages for the event using our WordPress-on-Steroids CMS implementation (namely Greensky User Interface). Visitors at our stand were literally queuing to leave details of projects on the MacBook Pro’s we had set up.

Our technical manager’s light-bulb moment before the show to include QR codes on our print and exhibition material was well received by all, with iPhones and Blackberries surrounding our stand for most of the day. We were (and still are) able to track the ongoing success of this through our various analytics and monitoring tools, each giving us insights to user behaviour on our website, as well as which services and topics are generating the most interest.

I presented a seminar on the first day at the seminar – we had spent the first part of the Thursday morning inviting people to attend. Little did I know that the limited (30) seats would not deter close to 100 people attending to hear our talk on “Little fish, Big Pond – helping SME’s to adopt the mindset of the major players online”. It seemed that many points resonated with these businesses, who began to understand the need to blend design, function and strategy if they really wanted to achieve the success of the big boys (many of whom we already work with!). You can download a copy of the presentation here, gratis.

The level of support from some of our existing clients and partners was also appreciated, with familiar faces like SBS Printers and Excel Passenger Services coming along to encourage us.

It seems that our marketing material and company ethos reflected the target audience perfectly, with most startups and SME’s truly valuing the idea of a digital agency with brains, who’ll treat them with love and help them make money!
